Tapping woke Dane early the next morning, and he groaned as he lifted his head and glanced at the clock. Five-fifteen. He looked at the large window in his room, where a black raven sat on the windowsill, something shiny in its mouth. Dane threw back his sheet and, in his fitted black boxers, opened the window; his bedroom on the second floor was not easily seen into.

‘Morning,’ he said to the large bird, who cocked its head and studied him before putting a gold ring on the windowsill. It looked up at Dane, repeating the greeting in perfect mimicry. Ravens were very good at that, and Dane always found it disconcerting.

‘Ah, thank you. Good work,’ Dane said and smiled; the raven nodded its head. While Dane looked over the neighbourhood, the bird hopped along the windowsill, as if waiting for something. Sure enough, Dane’s phone rang, and he hurried to get it, expecting it to be a work call. But no.

‘That’s a dangerous game you are playing, Son,’ his father said.

‘Morning, Dad. You have the ravens conspiring against me now?’ He returned to the window and the large black bird took flight as if it had reported back to his father and was now free to depart.

‘If and when needed,’ Murdoch confirmed. ‘Did you know he’s back?’

‘Who? Nikolas?’ Dane asked, anger quickly rising to the surface. ‘Yeah. So much for the overseas holiday.’

‘I suspect he never left.’

‘How do you know he’s back?’

‘I’m the Raven,’ his father said, as if it were obvious. ‘Austen is watching him. That should strike fear into him. Have you still got his power?’

‘Yes. I don’t want it.’

‘Don’t give it back just yet.’

‘Why?’ Dane asked, collecting the gold ring and closing the window. He sensed he wasn’t being told the full story again. He rarely knew what his parents were doing, but could not claim to be open himself.

‘He said something that caused your mother alarm. Something about the subservience of the Saggers or shapeshifters would end with this generation. Your mum is wary.’

‘Hmm. I suspect he’s already got that plan underway.’

‘Exactly. Your mum said you are going to ask Lark out?’

‘Bye, Dad.’

He heard his father laugh, but he added, ‘Be careful, Son,’ and hung up.

Dane exhaled and shook his head. If only he weren’t an only child, they’d have someone else to focus on. Putting on some running shorts and a T-shirt, he collected the gold ring and headed out of the bedroom and up one more flight to his library, formerly Daphne’s museum. Entering, he went to a locked cabinet, put in a code and pulled out a drawer and tin, adding the ring to the dozen or so in there.

‘Excellent,’ he said again with a smile, as he returned the tin to the drawer and locked the cabinet.

‘Good morning.’

Dane wheeled around. ‘Alfred!’

‘My apologies for the intrusion at this early hour of the day,’ Alfred said, in his usual formal manner. The former head of the Dove clan was much missed and admired, and today, as always, he looked dignified.
